The Hummel brand began with the Messmer family and dates back to 1923 in Hamburg. By 1935 the Danish company launched a range of sports equipment including Hummel football boots. In 1956 production expanded with the move to Germany and in 1964 Hummel signed their first sponsorship contract. Sponsorship in those days did not involve paying the club any money, as this didn’t happen until four years later. Instead they received two pairs of Hummel football boots for every footballer in the team.
